Trimmer line looks simple, but using the wrong diameter can give poor cutting performance, feed badly through the head or put unnecessary load on the machine. The best place to start is always the trimmer manufacturer's recommended line size.
Start with line diameter
The diameter is the most important measurement. Common sizes include 1.6mm, 2.0mm, 2.4mm and larger heavy-duty line. Smaller line is generally suited to lighter trimming, while thicker line is intended for machines designed to handle heavier grass and weeds.
Do not assume thicker is automatically better. If the head or engine is not designed for it, oversized line can reduce performance and may not feed correctly.
Match the line to the trimmer head
Check the trimmer head itself as well as the machine manual. Replacement heads and aftermarket heads can have different line capacities from the original equipment.
Round vs shaped line
Round nylon line is a good general-purpose choice and is often easy to feed. Shaped or edged line can cut aggressively, but suitability depends on the head and the job. For routine lawn edges and general property maintenance, the correct diameter matters more than chasing a particular profile.
Check how much line you actually need
Short pre-cut lengths are convenient for occasional use. Large rolls make more sense if you maintain acreage, use the trimmer frequently or have several compatible machines.
Before you buy
- Check the machine manufacturer's recommended line diameter.
- Confirm the trimmer head can accept that size.
- Choose a length that suits how often you use the machine.
- Do not force oversized line into a head that is not designed for it.
