How to Identify the Right Replacement Part for Your Mower, Chainsaw or Trimmer

DIY Shed guide to identifying the right replacement part for mower, chainsaw or trimmer

Replacement parts are often listed against several brands, models and part numbers, which can make a simple repair harder than it needs to be. The safest way to buy a replacement part is to identify the machine first, then work back to the original part number or an exact dimensional match.

1. Start with the machine model

Find the model label or identification plate on the mower, chainsaw, trimmer, brushcutter or other equipment. Record the full model number rather than relying only on the family name. Similar models can use different parts across production years.

2. Look for the original part number

If the old part has a stamped, printed or moulded reference number, use it. OEM and replacement part numbers are usually the strongest search terms because they are more specific than a product description.

3. Check superseded and replacement numbers

Manufacturers sometimes replace an older part number with a newer one. A suitable aftermarket item may list several references because it replaces more than one original number. That is normal, but the numbers should still match the application you are repairing.

4. Compare the physical fitment

Part numbers are important, but dimensions and mounting details matter too. Depending on the part, check things such as bolt spacing, shaft diameter, blade mount, thread type, electrical connector, hose position, pulley shape or overall dimensions.

5. Do not assume every model in a series is identical

A listing might say it suits a broad model family, but manufacturers can change components during a production run. If your exact model or part number is not listed, compare the removed part carefully before ordering.

6. Search using the most specific information first

A good search order is: original part number, replacement part number, exact machine model, then the general name of the part. For example, searching 192870 is usually more reliable than searching only for mower spindle.

Before you order

  • Confirm the exact machine model.
  • Match the original or replacement part number where possible.
  • Compare key dimensions and mounting points.
  • Check the quantity included in the listing.
  • Read any fitment notes on the product page.

DIY Doers product pages are being built to keep part numbers, compatible brands, compatible models and practical fitment information close to the top of the page so you can make that check before buying.
